Might sound hard to believe but I’ve never experienced a headache before but people close to me suffer from migraines though and it seems bloody awful. I feel lucky, in this respect.

I can tell you a few natural remedies that I know of and which has helped my headache suffering friends and family. Please keep in mind that what may work for some may not have any effect on others, it’s basically trial and error.

This might interest you: according to Chinese and Indian alternative healing practices, head pain correlates to illnesses in other parts of the body. So for example, in Ayurveda -

    1) Pain felt just under the temple, in front of the ear and along the jaw line indicates infection and tension along the gums and teeth. A possible cause would be grinding of the teeth during sleep.

    2) Pain located in, around and behind the eyeballs are indicative of over-acidity normally due to high consumption of acidic and acid forming foods.

    3) If pain is experienced around the bone of the eye (eye socket), it is said this is due to Gastritis an ailment where the lining of the stomach becomes inflamed and swollen.

    4) Pain just above the eye brows and along this portion of the forehead is said to be indicative of inflammation of the stomach and poor digestion.

    5) Pain at the top of the forehead at the front towards the hairline, is associated with ulcers.

    6) Pain at the top of the head at the front but just before the crown, is said to be due to disorders of the intestines.

    7) Pain at the crown of the head is believed to be caused by a disorder in the fallopian tubes.

    8) Pain towards the back of the head, just after the crown is said to be indicative of kidney disorders.

    9) Pain along the back of the head and above the neck area is looked upon as a problem in the urinary tract.

    10) Pain at the base of the head is said to be caused by Neuralgia.

    11) Pain in the temple area is said to correlate with the possible later formation of a cataract.

    12) Pain at the base of the head and along the back of the neck is is said to be indicative of spinal nerve damage and possible disorder within the brain.

So as you can see, according to these practices, treating only the pain is just one part of the healing. If the root cause is not found and addressed, the headaches will merely continue. But there are things you can do to momentarily relieve a headache:

    a) Try inhaling clove oil. It can calm the nerves and bring a sensation of peacefulness. A little of this oil mixed with some moisturiser or carrier oil can be massaged onto to the temples for a soothing effect.

    b) Oil of garlic in capsule form is very beneficial to the total health of the body. It is said that the oil can affect the brain, acting as a pain killer.

    c) Raw ginger made into a poultice, wrapped in muslin and applied to the forehead will bring quick relief to a headache. (Be careful. Raw ginger can burn slightly especially if you have sensitive skin).

    d) Avoid eating spicy and hot foods when experiencing headaches.

    e) A poultice or paste made of ground cloves or clove oil and salt mixed in a little oil, yoghurt or milk can be applied to the head. Salt, is known to be hygroscopic and will absorb fluids, the theory being that it can draw fluid from the head thus relieving tension.

    f) At the first sign of a headache, massage the soles of the feet. Look into the Japanese practice of Shiatsu to see how the different parts of the feet correlate to the body.

    g) Homeopathic remedies include: Spigelia, Arnica, Nux vomica, Belladona, Sepia, Bryonia Alba, Cimicifuga, Cyclamen, Lachesis, Ignatia amara and Gelsemium. These can be purchased at most Homeopathic stores but it is always recommended to take them under the guidance of a trained Homeopath who can better advise you on dosage.

Hope this helps a little. Peace & Love <3
